The New Way from Farmer to Customer
At the core of the macadamiafans concept is an innovative value chain: the small-scale farmers are paid fairly, the environment is strengthened and the customer is paying a cheap price. From seedling to finished product.
Preparation and support of selected small-scale farmers
The farmers receive certified plant material and modern knowledge about cultivation of macadamia trees and implementation of organic agriculture.
Harvesting and processing of the nuts
During the harvesting period, the macadamia nuts are collected – the nuts fall from the trees as soon as they are ripe. Instead of selling the harvest to distributors for highly fluctuating prices as was done in the past, the next step now is self-processing. In local processing facilities for each farming community, the families of the small-scale farmers are employed for drying, deshelling and vacuum-packaging their macadamia nuts. For the processing, the small-scale farmers receive an additional income based on the quality on top of a guaranteed base price. Therefore, they receiving a higher position within the value chain.
Transport and storage in Germany
From the storage of the processing plant, the packaged nuts are transported to Mombasa harbor and shipped off to sea in container ships. Arriving in Rotterdam after around 30 days, the nuts have finished around 95% of their 12,400km journey. From Rotterdam harbor, the nuts are directly transported to our German storage.
Dispatch and sale to end-customer
There, the nuts are being declared and welcomed into the EU. Afterwards, they are sent to the WELT:KLASSE-student companies. The students sell their own macadamiafans nuts. The learning effect is paramount: independent, socio-economic thinking, taking responsibility, the ability to work in a team as well as communication competencies are being promoted. To establish the contact to the producers and learn more about the living situations there, WELT:KLASSE-students can travel to Kenya in teams of four. During their stay in the village, they live in huts of the farmers and support them with planting the trees and processing the nuts.
